Colonial Pipe Boxes

A great friend and fellow woodworker sent me a copy of David T. Smiths book, American Country Furniture, during the summer while I was in the middle of a chair build. I wanted to find a small quick project and found these Colonial Pipe Box plans in his book were a perfect weekend project. The painted boxes are made from Eastern White Pine with various layers of milk paint and glazing. The cherry and walnut boxes are finished with a hand rubbed oil and hand waxed finish.

Smoking was a popular social custom in the Colonies. As a result, Colonial craftsmen fashioned small, detailed boxes for holding long-stemmed clay pipes and tobacco. These would also be found hanging on the walls of the local taverns.
