Shaker Wall Clocks
This wall clock is based off of one of the clocks made by Brother Isaac Newton Youngs (1793-1865) of the New Lebanon, NY Shaker community. The original clock currently hangs in display at the Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts. These clocks can be made with a traditional mechanical movement or a more modern battery operated quartz movement.
One of my favorite things about the original clock was the poem he wrote on the inside of the back cover, it reads: “O where will my fortune find when this shall cease to measure time?!” He also signed his clocks which was not customary for Shakers to do, in fact it was very much frowned upon and seen as drawing attention to yourself in this way. Brother Isaac signed his clocks where it would not be noticed on the back of the clock face.
